Throughout the book, Grant argues that we must learn to divorce our identity from our ideas. To what extent do you agree with his claim? What evidence can you draw on to support your view?
What is a core part of your identity that Grant might believe should be separated out as an idea? Where did this idea come from? Do you believe you would be able to let this idea go? Why or why not?
Consider a strongly held belief you hold. What evidence would it take for you to change your opinion? Are you open to revising your stance? Why or why not? How does your experience investigating a closely held view relate to Grant’s text?
Consider a strongly held belief you hold. Write an essay in which you adopt a different position and argue in favor of that position.
Grant argues that we need to avoid oversimplifying complex issues and instead address their nuances. Choose a controversial current issue or debate. Write an essay in which you identify, compare, and contrast the various positions within the traditionally opposing sides of that issue.
One of Grant’s favorite assignments in Erin McCarthy’s social studies class is her final project, in which she asks students to rewrite a portion of the textbook. Choose a topic that you believe is typically misrepresented and write an essay in which you correct the narrative. Address the methods you use to do so.
Grant argues that we must think like scientists in our lives more broadly. Consider a recent personal problem you’ve encountered. Write an essay in which you employ the scientific method to try to resolve the problem.
In Chapter 5, Grant outlines the key methods Harish Natarajan to win his debate against “Debra.” Look up a debate, TED talk, etc. online and analyze it through Grant’s lens. To what extent does the speaker or speakers adhere to Grant’s framework? Do you think it was successful? Why or why not?
In Chapter 10, Grant in part argues against adhering too closely to “best practices” rather than thinking about how those practices could be improved. Think about a set of traditional practices and analyze them. How can those practices be rethought or improved? What steps could you take to test your hypothesis?
In his epilogue, Grant acknowledges that there may be times when preaching, prosecuting, or politicking may be preferred to thinking like a scientist. What is an example of a time, do you think, when those methods might be preferred? How would you approach the situation as a preacher, prosecutor, or politician? How would you approach it as a scientist?
