Part 3, Chapter 65-EpilogueChapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 3: “The Reckoning”

Part 3, Chapter 65 Summary: “Coos County, New Hampshire”

Fred and his men arrive in New Hampshire. Reece waits for the men, prepared to kill them all. He is surprised at the sheer number of men who come but raises his gun to shoot. He stops when he recognizes Fred, his former sniper school buddy. He can’t bring himself to kill Fred, so he takes off into the woods, leaving the men to find an empty home. Reece realizes that he has one more name to add to his list since only one person (later revealed to be Ben) knew he would be at this location.

Part 3, Chapter 66 Summary

Katie’s story about the Project went live on a lesser-known website because her more mainstream contacts were afraid to publish it. The Hartleys’ communications team tries to discredit Katie. Lorraine encourages Congress to pass her Domestic Security Act, claiming that it will protect the American public from people like Reece.

Part 3, Chapter 67 Summary: “Bennington County, Vermont”

Liz and Reece use a small, private hangar as a base as he prepares for the next phase of his mission. He sends Liz shopping for various items, including a Sprinter van, chemicals, chemistry sets, and various household supplies. She is to buy the items using Marco’s cash and spread the purchases out geographically while wearing a wig to prevent any surveillance. Reece is creating an explosive-formed projectile (EFP), which was commonly used against American troops in the Middle East. Additionally, Reece asks Liz to reach out to Raife, a former SEALs team member.

Liz gathers all the supplies and contacts Raife through his sister. Reece begins working on his EFP. He laments not having his proper supplies, claiming that he will have to settle for creating this explosion like an “insurgent.”

Reece explains that he plans to create an EFP that will be able to cut through J.D. Hartley’s armored car. Reece has gotten Hartley’s address from a friend. Reece successfully creates his explosive, and he and Liz head off to get some rest.

Part 3, Chapter 68 Summary: “New York, New York”

Anthony Craig, J.D. Hartley’s driver, waits for him to come out of a meeting. J.D. eventually comes down, and as Anthony opens and closes the door for him, a black Sprinter van nearly knocks him off his feet. He assumes that it’s a delivery man, noting though that he looks unkempt with his long beard. He notices that the man has a white button in his hand and realizes that he is going to set off a bomb. As Anthony tries to get J.D. out of the car, the Sprinter van explodes, destroying J.D.’s car and turning the street “into a war zone” (355).

Part 3, Chapter 69 Summary

Reece flees the scene, hiding his identity by stealing a black hat from a Hassidic Jewish person walking past him. He eventually catches a cab and heads to Brooklyn. He listens to an initial report about the explosion, which blames it on a man of Middle Eastern descent. He arrives in Brooklyn and makes his way to the Marine Basin Marina, where Raife is waiting for him.

Part 3, Chapter 70 Summary: “Fishers Island, New York”

Raife and Reece circle Fishers Island so Reece can surveil the area. Once Reece has seen enough, Raife prepares to drop him off. Katie has figured out where Lorraine’s house on the island is, while Liz has tracked down Horn’s whereabouts nearby through some friends at the airport. Reece is dressed in a black wetsuit with tactical gear that will help him get to the island undetected.

Part 3, Chapter 71 Summary

Lorraine and Horn drink in her home. Lorraine is upset that Reece was able to track down J.D. Horn tells Lorraine that everything will be fine because they will make more money now that so many people are dead and that Lorraine will become president because people will feel so bad for her loss. Lorraine doesn’t believe him and is convinced that Reece will come to kill them. He tells her that he has planned for Reece to come to the house so that they can kill him, which scares Lorraine even more because he told her she would be safe in her home.

Part 3, Chapter 72 Summary

As Reece swims toward the mansion, he is hit with another headache. He comes onshore and goes into the woods, sneaking up on the property from the wood line. He sees four men in an SUV serving as security. He questions whether or not these are the only people in place, deciding to trust his gut that something seems off. He then spots a sniper.

Part 3, Chapter 73 Summary

Reece approaches Hartley’s mansion, first killing a sniper in the guest cottage. The sniper didn’t expect Reece because he assumed that he would come up from the sea instead of from the back. Reece then snakes around to the second group of security detail who are in an SUV. He sticks a timed explosive device under the car, setting it to explode in 10 minutes, and then makes his way into the mansion.

Part 3, Chapter 74 Summary

Reece enters Lorraine’s home to find her, Horn, and Ben Edwards. Additionally, Katie is tied up on the floor with an explosive device around her throat. Ben explains that if he removes his thumb from the detonator, Katie will be decapitated.

Ben is surprised that Reece isn’t shocked by his betrayal. Reece reveals that he knew he was involved once the SEAL team came to the cabin since Ben was the only one who knew he was there. Ben thanks him for killing so many people involved in the Project because it will increase their payout. Reece asks Ben how he could harm Lauren and Lucy, but Ben tells him that those decisions had already been made before he came into the Project. He admits that everyone has a price, and his price is close to 10 figures.

Ben offers to make Reece rich, admitting that he will have to serve some jail time before he can live happily with Katie. Horn changes the plan, telling Reece that he has the chance to save Katie’s life but must kill himself to do that. Horn is unable to finish his speech before the SUV explodes, creating a shockwave. In the chaos, Reece shoots Horn in the head and then shoots Lorraine. He then kills Ben. Despite Ben dying, Katie’s explosion does not go off.

Reece and Katie get ready to leave. Reece uses his father’s old lighter to light the bodies on fire before fleeing the property. Reece plans for them to leave on foot, but Katie spots a green and white 1973 Land Cruiser with keys in the ignition. They take the car and drive away.

Part 3, Chapter 75 Summary

Reece and Katie meet Liz, and Reece gives Katie a mini cassette recorder and a USB drive that has a recording from that night and a recording from Agnon. It also has all the intel and information that Ben gave him. Liz asks to come with them, but he refuses. Before he leaves, Katie asks him how he knew Ben hadn’t rigged the explosive device around her neck. Reece admits that he didn’t know whether or not it was rigged and then leaves.

Epilogue Summary: “Atlantic Ocean, Present Day”

Reece wakes up from a nap on Raife’s Beneteau Oceanis 48 (a boat). He is not a skilled sailor but can make do. He is ready to join Lauren and Lucy. Reece pulls out his terminal list and finishes crossing out all the names before looking at Lucy’s picture and throwing the picture into the sea.

Lorraine Hartley, Steve Horn, and an unidentified body were found in her house, adding to public speculation. Katie published several exposés about the Project, outlining how far up in the government the Project went.

Reece has a voicemail from Dr. German telling him that his tumor is noncancerous and can easily be removed surgically. The surgery has a high success and survival rate. He asks him to call in to schedule the surgery and says, “[E]njoy your new lease on life, Commander” (385). However, Reece no longer has his phone since he did not want to be tracked with it.

Part 3, Chapter 65-Epilogue Analysis

Reece’s showdown with his foil, Ben Edwards, highlights The Value of Loyalty, Friendship, and Brotherhood. Reece is ultimately able to kill Ben because he has broken their sacred covenant of brotherhood. The fact that Ben is the final person on his terminal list to die indicates that his betrayal makes him the worst person on Reece’s list.

Both Katie and Lorraine are thrown into the stereotypical role of damsels in distress. Katie is kidnapped because Ben thinks that Reece will be unable to resist acting as a hero one more time. However, Reece reveals later on to Katie that he didn’t know that the bomb around her neck wasn’t set up, indicating that ultimately his quest for revenge does outweigh his desire to be a hero. Lorraine meanwhile is described as being “hysterical” during her final hours. The word “hysterical” has historically been used to describe women acting in unbecoming or unmanageable ways. Therefore, by describing Lorraine this way, her lack of power in a patriarchal dynamic is revealed.

Eventually, Reece admits to Liz and Katie that he’s going to leave: “I’m going to die, Katie. They killed all my guys before we even left. Now it’s my turn” (380). He does not reference his wife and daughter here, implying that the more devastating deaths Reece experiences are those of his team members. This also indicates that Reece values brotherhood and community over anything else.
