She also makes one final call to Lester’s office, where she thanks him for helping her and that she hopes he can pass on her gratitude to Irene the security guard, who delayed her that morning. If it were not for Irene, the series of events to follow might not have taken place.

After signing in at the front desk of the building where Daniel’s interview was to take place, the two of them attempt to go up to the roof to kiss before Daniel’s interview. When they reach the roof, they encounter a security guard who has just finished his smoke break. The security guard tells them they are not allowed to be there. He coughs heavily. Surprisingly, Natasha tells him not to smoke as his cough seems alarming. She demands his pack of cigarettes. He relinquishes them, moved by her care, and permits them access to the roof.

Daniel and Natasha continue to ask each other questions on the roof. Daniel asks who Natasha would invite over for dinner. She decides to turn the question back on Daniel, who says sincerely that he would like to invite God. They joke about Daniel’s earnestness. Natasha tries to offer a scientific explanation of God and the universe by discussing dark matter. Daniel offers that the mysterious dark matter that holds the planetary bodies in their current orbit is love. According to him, love comprises the unaccounted substance of the universe.

The next question they answer is to fill in the blanks for the following: “We’re both in this room feeling…” (275). Natasha tries to joke her way out of answering so Daniel answers first, “Happy, horny, and hopeful” (275). When pressed, Natasha finally replies, “[c]onfused” and “[s]cared” and “happy” (275-76). They also respond to a question about their most treasured memory. Natasha remembers the first time she ate an ice cream cone wearing her Easter Sunday dress, which was her father’s idea. Daniel remembers fearing going on Space Mountain in Disney World but doing it anyway so that his parents would let Charlie go as well. Afterwards, Charlie commended him on being brave. Natasha and Daniel laugh about how both their memories involve people they are not fond of.

Chapter Summary: “Eyes: An Evolutionary History”

Scientists theorize that the first “eyes” began as a light-sensitive spot on the skin. These eyes evolved over time through a need for survival through sight and observation of predators. Due to this history of evolution, one might wonder why the phrase “love at first sight” privileges sight as the sensory mechanism for recognizing love. However, there seems to be a connection between love and sight. Studies have also shown that when people are attracted to one another, their pupils will dilate when the object of their affection is in their presence.

Samuel remembers two times when he performed as an actor with such greatness that he felt promise in his career. The first time was ten years ago, in Jamaica, when he performed in a play that would inspire his journey to the U.S. The second time was his performance in A Raisin in the Sun. He realizes that the underlying reason why he revealed his family’s undocumented status to the police was because he felt he did not belong in the U.S. He is too racially and culturally different. He says, “In America I can’t get an audience” (288).

Chapter Summary: “Daniel”

At his interview, Jeremy Fitzgerald wants to know why Daniel agreed to take part in the interview, despite appearing not to care. Daniel reveals that he is doing the interview for his parents, who want a better life for him. However, he is not sure about attending college as a pre-medical student and wants to be a poet instead. Jeremy presses him to explain further. Daniel openly questions Jeremy about his life, and whether his stable path in life truly led to happiness. Daniel figures out that Jeremy had just ended his new relationship with Hannah so that he would not break up his family. Daniel sees Natasha’s file on Jeremy’s desk and declares that he knows the lawyer’s client. Jeremy then reveals that he could not get a judge to reverse the Voluntary Removal status for Natasha. Heartbroken, Daniel feels the need to tell Natasha himself and gets up to leave. Jeremy urges Daniel to finish his interview. However, Daniel knows that time with Natasha counts and urges Jeremy to consider this sentiment in regard to his own life.

Chapter Summary: “Jeremy Fitzgerald: A Fairy-Tale History, Part 2”

Jeremy was unable to get a judge to reverse Natasha’s Voluntary Removal status because he had missed the court appointment with the judge that day. Instead of seeing the judge, he had spent the afternoon with Hannah, in a hotel room. He realized later that day that being with Hannah would ruin his family and broke up with her. In the future, Jeremy will think of Daniel and it will motivate him to divorce his wife and finally start a relationship with Hannah. Jeremy’s children will have tumultuous relationships following the divorce. However, Jeremy’s children with Hannah, who have reaped the rewards of their parents’ happy marriage, will go on to love healthily. Epilogue Summary: “Irene: An Alternate History”

After ten years, Irene, the security guard at USCIS, has quit her job and taken a new position as an airline attendant. She is much happier in this role than her work in the immigration building. On the day she was going to commit suicide, Lester Barnes had approached her to tell her that Natasha wanted to thank her. Irene was moved by Natasha’s message and decided to call a suicide hotline instead, beginning therapy that would change her life.

One day, while she is working on a flight, she notices Daniel in seat 7A and Natasha in 8C. She feels compelled to approach Natasha and tell her, “You saved my life” (343). Natasha remembers Irene and introduces herself, catching Daniel’s attention from his seat. He turns around and calls out to her. Natasha calls out to him, too.

“Natasha”-“Irene: An Alternative History” Analysis

At the end of the novel, Natasha and Daniel experience growth through the obstacles they have endured together. With Daniel’s support, Natasha gains the courage to confront her father about his distant behavior towards his family since their arrival in the U.S. She makes him promise to try harder to pursue his acting career when they return to Jamaica. She references Daniel’s earlier request for a do-over when she adds, “This is the life you’re living. It’s not temporary and it’s not pretend and there’s no do-over” (327). By spending time with Daniel and learning from his ability to take risks in life, Natasha imparts a similar lesson to her father. She forces Samuel to think about the urgency of pursuing one’s dreams without neglecting one’s family.

Through time spent with Natasha, Daniel learns to stand up for his beliefs and take practical action, rather than live in his dreams. He stands up to his family and lets them know his plans to become a poet. He also confesses to Jeremy Fitzgerald that he has no desire to go to Yale. As he explains his reason as to why he still attended the interview anyway, he expresses a mature sense of empathy for his father, who had pressured him to apply to Yale. Daniel explains that his father made him go to the interview “not because he’s a Stereotypical Korean Parent. But because he can’t see past his own history to let us have ours” (292). By drawing the boundary between what his family wants from him and his own desires, he learns to eventually make his own decisions regarding his life. He gains the bravery to do so through Natasha’s encouragement.

The conclusion of the novel also bridges together two seemingly minor forces that ultimately shape Natasha and Daniel’s relationship in a dramatic way. The development of Hannah Winter and Jeremy Fitzgerald’s relationship results in the immigration lawyer’s failure to stop Natasha’s deportation. Jeremy’s realization of his love for Hannah leads to his negligence in getting a judge to halt Natasha’s deportation, ultimately splitting Natasha and Jeremy apart for ten years of their lives.

Meanwhile, Irene, the former USCIS security guard, plays a major role in uniting Natasha and Daniel after ten years apart. Through Natasha’s interference, Irene decides to not commit suicide and pursue a new line of work as an airline attendant, a position that enables her to facilitate Natasha and Daniel’s eventual reconnection on the same flight years later. While the denouement is open-ended and does not reveal whether or not Natasha and Daniel rekindle their relationship in adulthood, the novel’s suggestion that “[m]aybe their universe is just taking longer to form” (34) suggests that true love takes time to develop. This references the novel’s opening, which posits that the universe requires a lot to create itself and become the complicated form it takes today. Similarly, the relationship between two young people needs time to form. As youth, Natasha and Daniel had learned a lot from each other, but they needed time to grow separately, away from each other’s influence. Through their individual growth following Natasha’s deportation, they eventually become ready to meet again years later.
