Frank realizes there are some things worth dying for, a lesson he should have learned when his mother died, but he didn’t. Now he decides he must sacrifice himself to help his friends and keep Gaea from winning. He asks Hazel for his firewood. Alcyoneus confronts Hazel, telling her, Frank, and Percy that the Titans thought they could come to America and crush the gods in their new home, but Alcyoneus’s brother, Porphyrion, is preparing to attack the gods on their home turf in Greece. Hazel takes control and orders Percy to protect Frank while she takes on Alcyoneus.
Frank lights his firewood and begins melting the chains holding Thanatos. As Frank waits for all the chains to break, he thinks of everything he’s been through these last few days and everything his grandmother told him. He thinks he has a good idea now what his family gift is. When Thanatos is free, there is only a small nub of the firewood left. Frank carefully puts it away and turns to help Percy who is growing tired from fighting the legion, but Percy directs him to help Hazel who is becoming overwhelmed in her fight against Alcyoneus. Frank becomes an eagle and uses his claws to scratch Alcyoneus’s eyes. Alcyoneus quickly heals, laughing because he cannot be injured or killed in his homeland of Alaska. Frank becomes a bear and charges Alcyoneus, battering his face. Frank ties a rope around Alcyoneus’s ankle and hooks it to Arion. Just then, the glacier breaks under Percy as he slams a staff into the ice, and he disappears off the edge with the ghost legion.
Frank hits Alcyoneus until he falls unconscious. Hazel and Frank ask Thanatos if he’s going to take them now, and he assures them that neither of their names is on his list. Hazel asks about her brother and the Doors of Death. Thanatos tells her the answer to both is in Rome. Thanatos then leaves for Camp Jupiter. As the glacier continues to break up, Frank and Hazel mount Arion and drag Alcyoneus off the glacier and out of Alaska. Frank turns into an elephant and rams Alcyoneus, wounding him. Hazel dismounts Arion and tells Alcyoneus he is no longer in Alaska and uses her sword to deliver a killing blow to Alcyoneus’s neck. Despite her son’s death, Gaea tells them they will never arrive at Camp Jupiter in time to save their legion from Polybotes.
Hazel and Frank return to Hubbard Glacier and find most of the glacier gone, but Percy waiting for them. They collect as many of the Imperial gold weapons as they can along with the Twelfth Legion’s eagle and load them on a chariot they hook up to Arion. Once again, the horse speeds them away, taking them back to Camp Jupiter.
Frank puts his life at risk to free Thanatos from his chains. After spending a considerable amount of time angry with the world for his mother’s death, Frank finally understands that there are some things worth dying for. His mother felt it was worth dying to protect the men she served with. For him, he is willing to die if it means saving Hazel, Percy, and his legion back at Camp Jupiter. For this reason, he uses his piece of firewood to free Thanatos. This sacrifice is immediately rewarded when Thanatos tells both Hazel and Frank it is not their time to go to the Underworld. They are both relieved, but this also means they will continue to play a part in the war against Gaea, an unknown that is both frightening and exhilarating.
Frank uses the one gift from his father that he accepts willingly, the gift of tactics to defeat Alcyoneus. Frank can see a battle and he can strategize using each side’s strengths and weaknesses. By utilizing this gift, Frank quickly figures out a way to remove Alcyoneus from Alaska so that he can be killed.
Frank’s transformations into various animals shows his acceptance of his family legacy, in combination with his acceptance of his mother’s death and his acceptance of Mars’s gift of tactics. It also shows great character growth on his part as he finally understands his identity and how he fits into his family and the world around him.
