Chapter 41 Summary: “Hazel”

Hazel jumps into the muskeg behind Percy, holding on to Frank’s bow as she does. She immediately slips into memory as she searches for Percy, recalling a happy moment she shared with her mother, Queen Marie. Gaea tells her she can remain in this memory forever if she will just give up. Hazel refuses. Hazel finds Percy and pulls on the bow. Frank pulls them both from the muskeg. Hazel tells them about Gaea, what she showed her, leaving out how Gaea said Hazel should have married Sammy, and how Gaea told her that she’d captured Nico. Percy promises they will find Nico, but first they need to clean up and find Alcyoneus.

Chapter 42 Summary: “Hazel”

Hazel takes her friends to the house she and her mother once rented that was now used as storage. Inside she discovers pictures that she once hung on the wall are still there. She shows her friends a picture of Sammy and a photo of her mother. Frank goes into town for clean clothes. They clean up and go into town for lunch. The journey to Hubbard Glacier is treacherous, and they likely won’t make it on time. As they eat, a gryphon arrives. It calls to others, and they see a mass of them coming over the horizon. They prepare to fight, but Arion arrives just in time to whisk them over the water to Hubbard Glacier.

Chapter 43 Summary: “Hazel”

Although the glacier is three hundred miles away from Seward, Arion arrives within minutes. The glacier itself is breaking up, but they manage to get to the top with Arion’s help. They find a frozen camp that looks like Camp Jupiter, but there is no one around. When they enter the camp and approach the Via Praetoria, they see a robed figure bound in chains. As they approach him, the camp comes to life, and they are quickly surrounded by armed ghost soldiers.

Chapter 44 Summary: “Hazel”

Hazel recognizes the soldiers as men from the 1980 Twelfth Legion, Fifth Cohort expedition. They are armed with Imperial gold weapons that are deadly to monsters and demigods. She asks the robed figure, Thanatos, to tell them they are there to help, but Thanatos tells her he does not control them—Alcyoneus does. Hazel demands to know how to free Thanatos, but he counters with the fact that he could send her back to the Underworld if he were free. She insists it doesn’t matter and asks again. Thanatos tells her the only way to break his chains is to use the fire of life. Before she and Frank can respond to that, Alcyoneus arrives.

Chapters 41-44 Analysis

Gaea’s attempt to entice Hazel to return to her former life so that she gives up her quest demonstrates the goddess’s returning power. She temps the demigods with their desires to prevent her own failure, reinforcing her evil characterization. This offer is not the first to be extended, as Juno tells Percy that he could run away to the sea and leave all his troubles behind him. Iris tells Frank that he can turn his back on the quest and live a life separate from his family legacy. Both Percy and Frank turned down this offer, and Hazel does as well. They are tested to see how committed they are to stopping Gaea and each passes. They show that they are strong of character, and they are not afraid to put themselves at risk for what they believe is the right thing.

Hazel gives up the most in her refusal because she knows exactly what she is giving up by choosing to continue the quest. She wanted to be with Sammy, wanted to live a happy life with her mother, but she also knows that giving all that up is the right thing to do because they cannot allow Gaea to win. The pictures of Sammy and her mother are sentimental to Hazel, and they remind her what she is fighting for even though these two people are already long gone from the mortal world. Hazel is fighting for love and that is never gone no matter what happens in the mortal world.

Arion returns, pointing to a connection between him and Hazel. Proving her bravery once more, Hazel insists she will free Thanatos even though it may send her back to the Underworld. Suspense builds once more as the results of this situation begin to unfold.
