Hazel is overwhelmed with guilt as they reboard the boat and head to Seattle. She decides to tell Percy and Frank the truth about her past in response to Phineas accusing her of putting the entire war into action because she helped Gaea raise Alcyoneus in 1941. Both Frank and Percy tell Hazel she wasn’t to blame and that she was brave for taking on Gaea on her own. However, she still feels guilty, so when she starts to fall into another of her blackouts, she holds on to Frank’s hand and takes him with her.
Hazel is in “Charon’s boat, crossing the Styx” (300). Hazel is taken in front of the three judges, and they sentence her to Elysium because of her bravery against Gaea. However, when she learns her mother is being punished for her actions, she insists on being punished as well. Hazel is sent to the Fields of Asphodel where she will drift aimlessly, lost and confused, for all of eternity. At first, she searches for her mother, but cannot find her. Finally, she sits under a tree to wait out eternity. As she and Frank sit, Frank tells her about the firewood and asks her to keep it for him. Nico arrives and offers Hazel a second chance.
Percy wakes Hazel and Frank and they find themselves back on the boat. Ella tells her there will be no more blackouts. Percy tells them they are in Seattle to visit Reyna’s sister who lives with the Amazons. They don’t know how to find her, but stumble on an office building for the website Amazon.com and take a chance. They are greeted in the lobby by a security guard with a nametag of Kinzie. When Percy mentions Hylla’s name, Kenzie immediately knocks Percy off his feet simply for speaking. They are taken to Hylla and learn she is the current queen of the Amazons, but she is being challenged by a former queen, Otrera, who has recently returned from the Underworld. Percy also recalls the events that destroyed Hylla and Reyna’s former home, the gorgon blood beginning to heal his memory. Hylla orders Frank and Percy to be jailed.
Hazel speaks with Hylla, convincing her of Gaea’s actions and the impending war. Hylla tells her she must battle Otrera that night and every night until one of them remains dead. To keep her crown, Hylla must win. For this reason, she cannot go to Camp Jupiter to help with the impending battle. However, she will not stop Hazel from rescuing her friends and escaping.
Hazel uses her ability with precious metals to distract the guards outside Frank and Percy’s cell by causing boxes filled with silver jewelry to explode, pushing the guards off the catwalk. She frees Frank and Percy, and they grab their weapons from a nearby room and run. They manage to return to the throne room where Hazel releases a magical horse, Arion, she believes to be the same one she once chased in Alaska. They hook him up to a chariot and escape despite being confronted by Otrera herself.
Hazel finally relieves herself of the secret she has been keeping from her friends by revealing that she has escaped the Underworld and that she was the one who originally woke Alcyoneus back in 1941. Hazel expects hatred and outrage upon her confession but instead receives support. Frank also shares his secret with Hazel, giving her the piece of firewood that is tied his mortality. The revelations of these secrets free the friends from a sense of impending doom and solidify their trust in one another. Their bond is strengthened as they move forward to face Gaea and their other enemies might have in store.
The Amazons provide comic relief to the tension building in the plot by introducing the women as the entity behind the internet company by the same name. Their side quest to ask Hylla, queen of the Amazons, to help Camp Jupiter in battle is continually comedic as Hazel blows up boxes of jewelry to assist in their escape. The foreboding returns as is it revealed that the former Amazon queen, Otrera, aims to battle Hylla for the throne every night because she has returned from the Underworld and does not stay dead. This serves to remind the demigods that the impending battle at Camp Jupiter is not the only fallout from the open Doors of Death.
