Chapters 63-EpilogueChapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 63 Summary

Having bathed, eaten and received medical treatment, Thomas sits on a couch and looks at his surroundings, still unable to trust what is happening. He is shocked that he made such a bold stand against David, and wonders what will come of it. Teresa joins him, and though he does not want to talk to her about what has happened, he tries to pretend as if everything between them is alright. He is taken aback by Teresa’s pronouncement that they will do whatever WICKED tells them to do. Thomas tells her that he will not, that after everything they have gone through, he cannot blindly follow WICKED or trust it. He notes how passive everyone is, and sees that they are once again being duped into submission, seemingly unaware how easily this false sense of security can be ripped from them. He marvels at Teresa, who has fallen asleep so easily on the couch next to him, but eventually he falls asleep as well.

Chapter 64 Summary

Thomas awakes, hears himself breathing, but sees only an expanse of white. A voice speaks to him telepathically, asking if he is alright. Thomas realizes that something about the voice is off, that it is not Teresa’s voice, after all. When he asks who is speaking inside his head, the voice turns out to be Brenda’s and she tells him that things are “about to get bad for you” (354). Thomas begins screaming frantically, and then wakes up.

Chapter 65 Summary

Thomas wakes up in a room by himself, and realizes that everything is wrong. Yet again, they have been tricked by WICKED. He is in new clothing, and the padded room has a desk in it, just like the desk in the dorm room. Thomas tells himself not to panic, to wait and see what will happen. He tries calling out to Aris and Teresa in his mind, but no one responds, so he falls back to sleep.

Thomas is awakened by Teresa speaking to him telepathically. She sounds scared, and tells him that they were all placed in a different room from him, and have been there for several days. They were told that the Flare was rooted too deeply in him, and that he is going crazy as a result of it. Thomas tells Teresa that it is all a lie, that he is locked in a room somewhere, and that all of it is just another part of WICKED’s Variables. He then wonders if he can really trust Teresa. With the fear of betrayal rising inside him, Thomas decides that he needs to cut ties with Teresa. She calls to him again, and he tells her to stay quiet and listen to him. He is glad to be speaking to her telepathically, because he does not think he can say what needs to be said to her face. When Teresa agrees to listen, Thomas tells her to “go away,” to leave him alone and to tell WICKED that he is done playing their games. Teresa pauses, and then agrees to leave him alone. Before leaving, however, she tells Thomas that “WICKED is good” (358).

Epilogue Summary

As in The Maze Runner, the epilogue is a memo from Ava Paige, the Chancellor of WICKED. The Chancellor says that now is not the time for emotions to get in the way of their progress. They have made great strides, but there is still much work to be done. She says that when the memory of each “subject” is fully restored, she has every confidence that they will be willing to do what WICKED will ask of them, and that they have the necessary Candidates in place as well. She notes that the future of the human race is more important than the deaths and sacrifices the subjects have endured. They will soon have their patterns, blueprints and, finally, the cure. The “Psychs,” says the Chancellor, are deliberating, and when the time is right, the Swipe will be removed from the subjects, and each one will be told whether or not they are immune to the Flare.

Chapters 63-Epilogue Analysis

Thomas feels that the teenagers are once again being pacified, and wonders how the same thing can happen again. He takes offense to Teresa’s attitude that they will do whatever WICKED tells them to when the time comes. With everything they have been through, Thomas cannot believe that Teresa can have such a passive attitude.

As Thomas suspects, things soon become strange for him again. He wakes up alone, in a white room, with Brenda speaking to him telepathically, telling him that things are about to get bad for him. Thomas realizes that it must be a dream, and wakes up, trying to reach Aris or Teresa instead. When he finally does, Teresa tells him that the other teenagers were informed that Thomas is going crazy due to the Flare. In this instance, Thomas realizes that WICKED is up to its old tricks. Surprisingly, Thomas comes to understand that he cannot trust Teresa either, and tells her to leave him alone from now on. In a strange twist, Teresa agrees, but reminds Thomas that “WICKED is good.” This revelation shows that perhaps Teresa has really been on WICKED’s side all along.

The chapters are set up so that the reader wonders if Thomas is really going crazy or not. Is he suffering from the Flare, as WICKED says? He is hearing and seeing things, and he is often angry during these last few chapters. In this sense, the reader is once again left to determine just who to trust, WICKED or Thomas.

The epilogue also highlights the fact that WICKED still considers itself to be a force for good, despite the death and suffering it has caused. WICKED is close to finding a cure and the “subjects” will soon have their memories back, though they will need to undertake another, unspecified task. Ultimately, the teenagers will have to decide if WICKED is in fact good, and if so, if they will undertake what WICKED asks of them, despite the outcome, for the survival of the human race.
