Nora realizes that Elliot must have been Grace’s cardiologist. He knew more than he was saying, and he’d once made a cryptic comment about ethics getting in the way of telling Nora more. Grace’s death had been a massive blow to Liam, and it was because of it that he considered selling the company. She was sure in that moment that he’d meant to leave Noone Properties to Grace and that the last-minute changes to his will before his death had come about because of her death.
Nora calls the company lawyer, Jonathan, and asks for more information. He agrees to talk to her but claims that he cannot speak then. Suddenly, someone comes up stealthily behind Nora. She is standing on the cliff and thinks of her father. It’s Sam. She tells him that Grace is at the heart of the family’s mystery.
Nora and Sam go to see Joe. Now that they know more of the story, Joe fills in the details for them. He explains that Liam had only ever really loved Grace and that he offered her a job at Noone right after he bought the company. He wanted to help her into a career path that would make use of the writing skills she cherished and the kind of work she could have done if she hadn’t been forced to quit her graduate program. Cory, who changed her name to Grace, excelled in her role, and Liam adored working alongside her. He always meant to leave her the company and was gutted when she died. It was only then that he realized his sons deserved it.
However, he had always intended to leave Windbreak to Nora; according to Joe, he knew that Nora would use her design skills to turn the property into something amazing. Joe admits to being romantically involved with Cece, but after everything else that’s been revealed, it now feels like a non-issue. Sam briefly tries to accuse Joe of their father’s murder, pointing out how upset he must have been to be cut out of the company, but Joe waves him off. Nora thinks about the night her father died and realizes that she knows who was probably there with him.
The narrative flashes back to five years ago. Liam tells Grace that he intends to leave her the company. She points out that this could out their clandestine relationship and that the company should probably go to his children. He notes that Sam and Tommy will be minority shareholders and tells her that he doesn’t care. She also points out that she is not much younger than he is and that him leaving her the company might not be the security he thinks: Her tenure there without him would likely not be long, and at that point, the company would pass into the hands of someone else who might not remain true to his vision. He tells her that he does not care: They built the company together, and it should be hers.
In the present, Nora realizes that Paul killed Liam. She and Sam go to his apartment to confront him. He admits it, although he tells them that he was just angry and had shoved Liam without meaning to kill him. It was rainy, and Liam had slipped on the cliff’s wet rocks. Paul tells them that he met Grace in graduate school. She was a writer and he a photographer. He was instantly smitten, but she was aloof. Later, they reconnected, and she explained her complex relationship with Liam. He thought that he could become more important to her, but he never did.
He was spreading Grace’s ashes at Windbreak the night Liam died, per her request, but Liam surprised him—he hadn’t expected Liam to be there. He argued with Liam and shoved him without meaning to kill him. It had been an accident, of sorts, but he’d immediately fled the scene. Nora feels empathy for this man who had been so wounded by her father. She reaches out to take his hand when he finishes the story.
Sam and Nora discuss Paul, Liam, and Grace. They admit how difficult life must have been for all of them and think about their own fraught relationships. Sam realizes that he should not marry Morgan. Nora realizes how much she loves Jack.
The narrative shifts to one year ago. Liam proposes to Grace, as he does every six months or so. She declines, but she does agree to move in with him, at long last.
Back in the present, Nora is staying at Windbreak and working on a few nearby projects, including a house for Sam. He has left his job at Noone Properties to pursue something in the sports field, perhaps scouting. She goes to the restaurant that Jack is helping his friend with. She eats dinner and asks to see him. He is cautious at first. She asks him out for ice cream, which is what she did on the day they met in middle school. He laughs and agrees to go with her.
The impact of grief and loss, especially when they remain unprocessed, is one of this novel’s primary subtexts. In this section, Nora and Sam learn more about the way that grief and loss impacted Liam. They now know that Grace is none other than Cory, Liam’s high school girlfriend. Because Cory/Grace died a few months ago, Liam’s difficult-to-understand and unfulfilled plan to sell the company makes more sense. They realize that because Grace was the only woman Liam truly loved, her death must have been an immeasurable loss to him. Joe confirms this, telling them, “Your father didn’t want to do it without Grace” (264). Meanwhile, Nora has been reflecting on the way that losing her parents impacted her own ability to connect to Jack, and she additionally has tried to help Sam understand the way that losing Liam affected his relationships. Because of this, the two are primed to understand their father in a new and important way: Liam becomes not just an emotionally distant workaholic but a man who spent the entirety of his life unable to have a “normal” relationship with the love of his life. They see him in a new light and can have more empathy for him than they previously did.
Liam’s character becomes even more complex in light of his work history with Cory/Grace. The author reveals that he offered Grace a position doing marketing and branding with Noone Properties, correctly identifying that she would be able to use her creativity in ways that would still be fulfilling, although outside of the professional writing world. Liam is thus revealed as not only a caring man but also an insightful one: He correctly identified Grace’s strengths and helped her use them. This section shows that Liam also recognized Nora’s skills and abilities. Joe reveals that he intended to leave Nora his cottage because he was sure that she would be able to use her architectural ability to turn the property into something truly beautiful. Upon hearing this, Nora is touched that her father knew her so much better than she thought he did.
Liam’s spirit of understanding and his children’s discoveries about his true nature are at the core of the novel’s final arguments on self-actualization, personal growth, and forgiveness. Nora and Sam learn that Paul accidentally caused their father’s death, but they realize how difficult his life with Grace must have been, knowing that she loved someone else. They forgive Paul and abandon their investigation into Liam’s death, choosing instead to focus on their own lives. Each examines their stilted approach to romantic relationships. This results in Sam abandoning his plans to marry someone who he can now admit is wrong for him. Nora, in turn, decides to emotionally commit to Jack. Additionally, Sam leaves Noone for more fulfilling work. The siblings have repaired their own fractured relationship, and the novel ends on a hopeful note.
