Background

Authorial Context: Rick Riordan’s Work

A longtime teacher before becoming a full-time author, Rick Riordan is known for writing novels that take elements of history and mythology and make them accessible for children. His best-known work is the Percy Jackson series, a modern take on the story of Perseus that weaves elements of Greek mythology into a contemporary fantasy story. Riordan went on to publish other book series based on different mythologies, creating a popular template in the middle grade publishing space. After fielding many requests to write books using mythology from around the world, Riordan launched an imprint of Disney Hyperion books dedicated to middle-grade fiction based on mythologies written by diverse creators. Riordan’s books have sold over 30 million copies.

Rick Riordan’s writing style is colloquial and accessible, using “short, snappy sentences” and straightforward diction (“An Interview With Rick.” Rick Riordan). He does not believe in writing down to children, believing that both child and adult readers want the same things: “a fast-paced story, characters worth carrying about, humor, surprises and mystery” (“An Interview With Rick”). His protagonists tend to be flawed, realistic children whom readers can relate to and who embark on extraordinary, action-packed adventures. For example, Percy, the protagonist of his Percy Jackson series, has dyslexia; Riordan believed that portraying a dyslexic hero “honor[ed] the potential” of students he had encountered with learning differences (“An Interview With Rick”). The Maze of Bones continues in the tradition of Riordan’s other work, featuring his colloquial writing style and relatable protagonists who step up to embark on an adventure. Riordan trades out mythology for general history in this novel series, using well-known figures like Benjamin Franklin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Riordan believes in creating works that welcome children in and encourage their interest in reading.

Series Context: The 39 Clues Franchise

The Maze of Bones is the first novel in an interactive mystery-adventure franchise published by Scholastic. Editors at Scholastic came up with an idea to create an interactive book series to pair with an online game and collectible cards. Scholastic approached Rick Riordan to write the first book and architect the broad arc of the series. Riordan crafted a universe that revolved around the Cahills, a highly influential family whose history stretches back 500 years and includes notable figures like Benjamin Franklin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Riordan wanted to design a story that would encourage children to learn about history through an exciting, fast-paced story. Due to the accelerated publishing schedule, Scholastic brought in many other prominent authors to write books in the series, including Gordan Korman, Linda Sue Park, Peter Larangis, Jude Watson, and more.

The first book in the series introduces the central mystery and takes its sibling protagonists on a trip to uncover the first clue. Little is revealed about the identity of the antagonist or the stakes of failing in the clue quest. To understand the pacing, it is important to note that new books were published at three-month intervals—much faster than ordinary sequels. The series functioned like a serialized publication, with each published episode advancing a single overarching story. Readers could also play the online game, explore the website, and participate in challenges offering major prizes while waiting for the next installation of the story.

The Maze of Bones ended up being a major success and launched a bestselling franchise. Scholastic published five series in total in the 39 Clues universe: The Clue Hunt, Cahills vs. Vespers, Unstoppable, Doublecross, and Superspecial.
