Chapters 17-20Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 17 Summary

Leo is proud of everyone’s reaction to Festus, although he knows that the dragon’s control disk may have further problems. He tells his friends about Tia Callida, as well as the “sleeping lady” who appeared just before his mother’s death. After opening up so much, he feels incredibly vulnerable.

Chapter 18 Summary

The groups arrives on the roof of a hotel, guarded by two teenagers with “icy white hair and feathery purple wings”; these are Calias (Cal) and Zethes, children of Boreus (200). Cal wants to destroy them (and asks permission from Zethes to do so several times), but Piper persuades them that they must make an emergency landing due to Festus’s leaking head. When they learn Jason is the son of Zeus, they announce they’ve been “waiting” for him. A beautiful girl arrives, and Leo immediately falls in love with her. However, she tells him he cannot proceed further with his friends: “fire and ice—it would not be wise” (209).

Chapter 19 Summary

Jason is nervous, and Piper comforts him. He finds himself attracted to her. The princess introduces herself as Khione, goddess of snow. It’s clear that she’s attracted to Jason. She tells him, “’Hopefully you will survive your little talk’” (213).

Chapter 20 Summary

Jason and Piper enter a hall filled with ice-encased bodies that may or may not be sculptures. Boreus tells them that he has orders from Aeolus to kill all demigods he meets. Most recently, in a battle the summer before, they loosed the venti. However, he acknowledges that he must hear out a son of Zeus before killing him. Jason explains their mission, and that the storm spirits attacked him, too. Boreas says he knows where they are, and reveals that Coach Hedge is with them. Piper concocts a plan to capture the storm spirits and bring them to Aeolus in exchange for a pardon. Khione tries to dissuade her father. When he sees the tattoo on Jason’s arm, he takes on his Roman form and seems to suddenly understand Hera’s “dangerous game” (223). He tells Jason, “If Hera’s plan fails […] you will tear each other apart” (224). They meet up with a freshly-showered Leo and leave.

Chapters 17-20 Analysis

These chapters show the growing bond between the books’ three central characters, but also hint at possible divisions. Together on Festus’s back, Leo reveals a backstory he has shared with almost no one. The group is hesitant to break up when Khione announces that Leo’s fire is unwelcome in her father’s icy halls. Furthermore, Jason finds himself reciprocating Piper’s feelings. All three have grown protective of each other.

Hovering in the background, however, is Piper’s possible betrayal. Boreus clearly understands why Jason identifies with the Roman aspects of the gods, and something about his true, Roman identity suggests to him that the group will fail.

These chapters also suggest that there is some dissent among the gods. Boreus and Aeolus are clearly not inclined to protect the demigods, and Boreus is not eager to help rescue Hera. Furthermore, it’s clear that Khione doesn’t wish to permit the demigods to leave at all.
