Part 1Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 1: “The End Begins”

Part 1, Chapter 1 Summary: “Endling”

As the runt of her family of dairnes, Byx sees herself as a disappointment because she is smaller and weaker than her siblings. Dairnes are similar to dogs but have opposable thumbs, a pouch, and glissaires—excess skin under the forelegs that allows them to glide. They also have the ability to speak. Byx’s pack consists of just four families. Humans hunt dairnes for their soft coats. Due to all the poaching, Byx’s pack worries that they might be the very last of the dairnes, but there is a legend that the First Colony of dairnes still lives on a mythical, sentient island. Byx knows that her parents worry about her, believing that she might die easily in an attack, but Byx would rather die than be the last dairne left.

Part 1, Chapter 2 Summary: “A Visit From Some Butterbats”

Byx’s family sleeps during the day and travels or works at night. Currently, the family is staying in a mirabear hive, which is a massive, wasp-like hive. Today, Byx is restless and slips outside the mirabear hive when she hears a noise that turns out to be four butterbats—flying creatures with shimmering wings. As Byx watches the butterbats, her mother, Maia, comes outside to check on her and tells her that the butterbats are migrating north. Wishing that she, too, could go on adventures, Byx expresses frustration at her small size and limited abilities compared to her other siblings, but Maia reassures her.

The dairnes plan to move north that night when everyone awakens because their pathfinder, Myxo, has heard rumors of other dairnes in the north and feels that this is their best chance to join up with another pack. Their ultimate hope is to find the First Colony, which, if it still exists, is supposedly located in a place called Dairneholme, on a sentient island. Byx eyes the edge of the woods and wonders what the ocean looks like in full sunlight. Despite her promise not to wander, Byx decides to take a look.

Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary: “The Boat”

Byx makes her way to the edge of the cliff and is surprised to discover that the ocean seems to be endless and violent. Hearing a cry, Byx notices a small boat foundering on the rocks and battered by waves. The small figure in the boat looks like a wobbyk—a small, round creature with three tails. Byx understands that the boat’s owner is in serious trouble and will likely drown unless someone comes to the rescue.

Part 1, Chapter 4 Summary: “A Plea for Help”

As Byx watches the small boat struggle in the waves and hears the wobbyk call for help, she recalls a time when Maia prepared a dinner of wobbyk when meat was scarce. She remembers the meat being tasteless but satisfying. Byx considers saving the creature by gliding down to it using her glissaires, but as she considers the pros and cons, she suddenly catches the scent of humans on the air. Byx hears a dairne warning signal but doesn’t believe that it was made by a dairne. The humans approach behind Byx. She briefly worries that they are soldiers of the Murdano (the king), but she soon realizes that they do not wear his red and silver livery. Instead, she believes them to be poachers. One human entreats the others not to kill Byx, but the leader of the poachers strings his bow and fires an arrow at the young dairne, forcing her to leap from the cliff.

Part 1, Chapter 5 Summary: “Rescue at Sea”

Byx glides down toward the struggling boat, arrows flying all around her. As she approaches the boat, it smashes on the rocks. She grabs the wobbyk’s paw and carries him with her to a small patch of sand revealed by the retreating waves. They quickly climb the rocks as the poachers continue to fire arrows at them, finally moving over a spur that hides them from view.

Part 1, Chapter 6 Summary: “And You Are a…”

Byx and the wobbyk begin walking along the surf to hide their footprints, making their way to a place where they can more easily climb back up to the woods. Byx is concerned about returning to her pack. The wobbyk, who introduces himself as Tobble, expresses his gratitude and tells Byx that he was kidnapped by pirates while fishing with his siblings; he stole the small boat to escape. Tobble asks Byx what she is and does not believe her when she calls herself a dairne. Tobble claims that dairnes are extinct. Scenting the humans, Byx makes Tobble stop walking.

Part 1, Chapter 7 Summary: “The Poachers Return”

Byx and Tobble carefully approach the area, where a human boy stands alone. This boy, the poachers’ guide, is joined by another who chastises him for losing Byx’s trail. Two more men join them and debate whether they saw a wolf or a dairne. The young boy asks the older men not to kill the creature if they see it again, insisting that it would be worth more money alive, but they dismiss him. The older men walk away, but the boy stands alone and seems to look right where Byx and Tobble are hiding.

Part 1, Chapter 8 Summary: “Three Tails, Three Saves”

As Byx continues her trek home, Tobble follows. He tells Byx that because she saved his life, the Wobbyk Code decrees that Tobble must save her life three times in repayment. Byx refuses the offer and tells Tobble to go home, but Tobble refuses. Byx doesn’t know what she will do with Tobble once she arrives home, but she believes her pack will refrain from eating him. As they travel, they discuss some of the dairnes’ traits, and Byx explains that although her kind used to nest in trees, they now nest on the ground to allow for a quick escape from danger. Tobble shares that his people live underground and build great tunnels and rooms. As they talk, Byx senses trouble and drops into a gallop.

Part 1, Chapter 9 Summary: “Fear”

As Byx approaches her pack, she stops and listens intently. She doesn’t hear any sound, and this worries her because she knows her pack should be awake and preparing to travel north. Byx drops Tobble off her back and runs toward her pack. Climbing over a small hill near the nest, Byx suddenly hears terrifying sounds.

Part 1, Chapter 10 Summary: “The Unthinkable”

Peering down from the top of the hill, she sees the Murdano’s soldiers attacking the mirabear hive. As a soldier pierces her teacher, Dalyntor, with a spear, Byx sees the dead bodies of her family piled together. Enraged, Byx runs toward the hive to exact revenge, but suddenly, an arrow hits her right side; the missile is attached to a filament. A voice tells her to be still, but she struggles until she is hit in the neck, and the world goes dark.

Part 1 Analysis

Although Byx begins her story shackled by a sense of her own physical weaknesses, the dominant theme of Discarding Limitations and Reinventing the Self soon manifests in her courageous actions as the story gains momentum. From the very beginning, she proves herself to be fearless and caring, for even in the midst of her own life-or-death struggle, she takes the time to save Tobble from certain death as well, demonstrating her penchant for Developing Unlikely Friendships. Byx initially jumps from the cliff to protect herself from the poachers, but saving Tobble is a spontaneous act of heroism that will prove to be a reliable character trait for Byx as her adventures unfold. Compounding her strong personality is the dire situation in which she finds herself, for she, like the rest of her pack, is a member of a unique species that is on the verge of extinction. As such, her world is haunted by many unseen dangers, and this reality is soon demonstrated by the poachers who stalk her and murder her family, thus propelling her into the first few steps of a Hero’s Journey. Danger is clearly an element of Byx’s everyday life, but it hasn’t quelled her desire for adventure, making her brave despite her sense of inadequacy around her family.

The theme of Developing Unlikely Friendships is demonstrated in several different ways in these early chapters, for although Byx’s first experience with humans is to be hunted by poachers, her observation of the guide gives her a more positive perspective on humans. This guide appears to be aware of Byx and Tobble standing nearby, giving Byx the impression that this human might be attempting to protect her. Thus, the narrative also implies that this same human must have been the one to give Byx the dairne-style warning signal before the poachers’ first approach and to petition the poachers not to kill her. All this evidence suggests that the guide is attempting to protect Byx for as-yet-unknown reasons. This foreshadows the guide’s further attempts to protect Byx, which will be revealed in the upcoming chapters.

As the various characters present themselves for consideration, Applegate continues to add new flourishes to her developing world, and thus Byx finds herself befriending Tobble, a round-bodied wobbyk with three tails and a talkative, entertaining demeanor. Every hero needs a sidekick, and with the character of Tobble, Applegate creates a steadfast, loyal companion for Byx in the midst of her growing troubles. Honor-bound to save Byx’s life three times, Tobble’s presence as a friend to Byx, even when the dairnes have been known to prey upon wobbyks, emphasizes the theme of Overcoming Prejudice, for Byx decides to introduce him to her family despite this awkward fact. Tobble’s stubborn insistence upon fulfilling the terms of his honor code also establishes a solid reason for his determination to remain close to Byx for the remainder of the novel.

The death of Byx’s pack is significant both on a personal level for Byx and on a societal level. For Byx, the demise of her family represents the loss of everything she has ever known. Byx has been isolated from the world by her pack, living and traveling in secrecy for her whole life up until this point. Her pack has taught her what little she knows of the world, and without them, she no longer has the guidance, support, or love that she has always known. On a larger level, Tobble and Byx have already hinted that there are few dairnes left in the world, at least not in Nedarra where they live. The extinction of an entire species is significant to the environment and society, especially this society in which dairnes are one of the six governing species. This loss will resound throughout the novel as Byx makes her way in the world alone.

Applegate also uses these early chapters to introduce several vital world-building threads. For example, the Murdano is mentioned several times, mostly regarding the danger that his bloodthirsty soldiers present to the dairnes. It is important to note that the soldiers who killed Byx’s pack are wearing the Murdano’s colors. Because the Murdano is the ruler of Nedarra, his underhanded role in the systematic extermination of the dairnes will become a central issue as the novel continues to develop. At the same time, the idea that there might be a colony of dairnes on a sentient island will also become a focus as the details of Byx’s journey coalesces and sets the stage for the subsequent novels in the series.
