Chapter 1 Summary: “Cameron Boxer”

Cameron Boxer, or Cam, is an eighth grader at Sycamore Middle School who loves video games and plans to become a gaming streamer. Just as he starts his stream, the doorbell rings. He tries to ignore it, but Jordan Toleffsen, the student president, wants Cam to attend a party for the Positive Action Group (P.A.G.). Jordan begins calling Cam and banging on his door. Cam quickly ends the call, but Xavier Meggett, another P.A.G. member (or pagger), calls asking where he is. Cam hangs up on Xavier, only to get a call from Pavel Dysan, one of his best friends. Pavel, clearly at the P.A.G. party, says there is an emergency with their friend Chuck, but Cam cannot hear him well over the music. Cam, Chuck, and Pavel form a gaming group called the “Awesome Threesome.”

Cam decides to go to the party to find out what is happening with Chuck. Everyone is happy to see Cam at the party, which overwhelms him. Xavier gives Cam some cookies to sell for the library fundraiser. Cam finds Pavel but loses the cookies, and the partygoers quickly eat them. Cam hides this from Xavier, worried about his reaction. Cam tries to leave with Pavel, but his friend Chuck and Daphne Lebowitz, another P.A.G. member, stop him to announce they are dating.

Cam initially created the P.A.G. to prove to his parents that he was responsible, which would free up time for gaming. Cam, Pavel, and Chuck created a webpage for the club but made it impossible for anyone to join. However, Daphne found the club's webpage and forced it to become real. When Chuck reveals his new “ship,” Duckne, Cam drops his phone. His screen cracks and he sees complaints about his stream. Frustrated and feeling trapped by the P.A.G., he decides to distance himself from the group to make his stream successful.

Chapter 2 Summary: “Chuck Kinsey”

Chuck meets Cam and Pavel at Sweetness and Light, a local candy shop and their regular after-school hangout spot. They discuss Chuck's relationship. Chuck cannot understand why his friends are not happy for him and assumes they are jealous. Cam and Pavel worry that Daphne struggles to keep secrets. Chuck promises that nothing will change except Daphne will be around more. He then reveals that she is coming to join them.

Pavel is upset that Daphne is intruding on their Awesome Threesome time but agrees that she can come if Daphne does not eat gummy worms, the boys' traditional snack. They devise a plan to give Cam more time to stream by spreading a rumor that he is failing his classes. Cam and Pavel tell Chuck not to tell Daphne the truth, which makes him nervous as couples should not keep secrets. When Daphne arrives, they tell her Cam is failing eighth grade because the P.A.G. takes up too much of his time. Daphne offers to take over the P.A.G. for Cam.

Chapter 3 Summary: “Cameron Boxer”

Cam plans to spread the rumor that he is failing his classes, but Daphne has already told everyone. Cam creates a new persona to keep streaming without being recognized by his classmates. He wears a Zorro mask and stuffs his mouth with gummy worms to disguise his voice. He changes his online name to GamerFox229, as “Zorro” means “fox” in Spanish and starts his stream. Someone bangs on the door during the stream, and Cam's small following leaves.

Cam opens the door and finds Chuck holding Elvis, a beaver the P.A.G. built a habitat for. Chuck is worried that Elvis is too skinny. Cam and Chuck argue. Cam insists that Chuck's concern over Elvis is due to Daphne. Chuck leaves with Elvis. Cam returns to his stream and does well until a loud noise interrupts him. He finds Elvis gnawing on the house siding. Cam brings Elvis inside and resumes his stream, but all his followers are gone. Elvis climbs onto the back of the couch and watches Cam play.

Chapter 4 Summary: “Pavel Dysan”

Pavel watches Cam’s stream when Chuck arrives at his house, worried because he has lost Elvis. Chuck will meet Daphne at Elvis's habitat—worried about the beaver and Daphne's reaction, Pavel takes Chuck to watch Cam’s stream. Pavel points out Elvis in the stream, who intently watches Cam play.

Pavel and Chuck go to Cam’s house to pick up Elvis. Melody's scream upon seeing the beaver sends Elvis into his carrier with little issue. Pavel and Chuck return Elvis to his habitat. Daphne is already there, so Pavel distracts her while Chuck puts Elvis back in his home.

Chapter 5 Summary: “Cameron Boxer”

Mr. Fanshaw, the guidance counselor and P.A.G. advisor, stops Cam to ask why he missed the recent P.A.G. meetings and reminds him about the fundraiser on Saturday. Mr. Fanshaw expresses concern that Daphne is taking over many of Cam's duties for the P.A.G. Cam worries because Saturday is his best day for streaming. He cannot understand the fluctuation in followers—from 0 to over 200 and back down again. Pavel explains that the boost in followers was because of Elvis. The novelty of having a beaver watching Cam play attracted some viewers. When the gaming became exciting, Elvis's tail slapped, which brought in more viewers. Cam decides he needs Elvis in all his streams.

Chuck disagrees, thinking it is cruel to Elvis. Pavel convinces him, arguing that Elvis enjoys watching video games. They decide to capture Elvis, have him present for all of Cam's streams, and return him to his habitat after the stream ends.

Chapter 6 Summary: “Melody Boxer”

Cam's sister, Melody, a sixth grader at Sycamore Middle School, is a better gamer than Cam but quit after a gaming competition. Melody is furious when Cam brings back Elvis, but she agrees not to tell anyone in exchange for 20% of Cam's profits.

Melody watches the stream and is surprised at how smoothly it runs. Pavel and Chuck read the followers' questions so Cam can respond, and Elvis watches Cam's gaming and reacts to what happens on the screen by squeaking or slapping his tail. By the end of Cam's stream, he has nearly 400 followers. She realizes that her 20% may be worth something.

Chapter 7 Summary: “Cameron Boxer”

Cam worries about managing his Saturday as he must pick up Elvis, run his stream, return Elvis to his habitat, and attend the library fundraiser. He picks up Elvis, finishes his stream, and rushes to the fundraiser with only 10 minutes left. Due to the time crunch, he takes Elvis to the library.

The paggers are thrilled Cam took time off from “studying” to help them. They offer to tutor Cam, but he refuses. Daphne puts Cam in charge of the overstock sales booth. Cam finds a copy of Guardians of Geldorf, or Guardians, one of his favorite games that Melody threw out. He asks Pavel to buy it. Meanwhile, Elvis escapes from his carrier and starts knocking over tables.

Chapters 1-7 Analysis

Level 13 is a sequel to Slacker, which introduced the Positive Action Group (P.A.G.) and its impact on Sycamore Middle School students. In the first section of Level 13, Korman shows how the P.A.G. has helped almost every character grow while Cam remains the same.

Middle school is challenging as teenagers work on their Evolving Identities, Relationships, and Responsibilities. From the start, P.A.G. members demonstrate how the group has helped them handle these changes. Student council co-president, Jordan, says, “I want to go into politics when I grow up. That’s why I joined the P.A.G. in the first place—I thought it would help me get elected student body president. But elections are all about beating the other candidate. And in the P.A.G. we learned that cooperation is what gets things done and makes the world a better place” (6). Jordan learned The Importance of Community, Collaboration, and Friendship through the P.A.G. and now works collaboratively to strengthen his community through active participation and collaboration in P.A.G. While Jordan appreciates the P.A.G.'s impact, Cam tunes him out. Here, Korman shows how little Cam’s character has changed since the first book.

Xavier Meggett, another P.A.G. member (or pagger), also grows because of the group. Assigned to the group for community service after several run-ins with the law, the club, according to Xavier, “straightened out his whole life” (4). Xavier finds new outlets through the P.A.G., engaging in art and cooking to express himself and help his community, further cementing Korman’s exploration of The Importance of Community, Collaboration, and Friendship. He makes cookies for the library fundraiser, showing his commitment. However, Cam misplaces them, and others eat them, highlighting how everyone around Cam has grown emotionally while Cam remains stagnant. Moreover, this interaction illustrates how little Cam values the P.A.G., despite recognizing the group's impact on others.

Additionally, Chuck starts a new relationship with Daphne, frustrating Pavel and Cam and creating tension between the Awesome Threesome. Chuck's new romantic relationship is part of growing up as relationships evolve, including the Awesome Threesome's relationship. Chuck matures and changes his relationship with Daphne, while Pavel and Cam struggle to accept these changes, even insisting Daphne not eat their traditional group treat of gummy worms. Korman uses Chuck and Daphne to show how everyone grows and matures at different rates, which can strain relationships. Tensions between the Awesome Threesome demonstrate Korman’s continued exploration of the theme of Evolving Identities, Relationships, and Responsibilities.

One of the novel's youngest characters, Melody, also experiences growth from the original novel. She learns that she has no desire to become a professional gamer despite having innate talent. After attending Rule the World, a gaming competition, with her brother, Melody lost interest in gaming. She was concerned over being “trapped inside a convention center for three days with 10,000 clones of my brother—some of them in their forties!” (51). Melody even recognizes that Cam learned nothing from the experience, pointing out that their communication has completely disintegrated because Cam cannot understand her decision not to pursue professional gaming. While Melody changes her desires, reflecting how her identity continues to evolve and grow as she does, Cam struggles to accept this change.

Throughout this section, Cam is the only character who has remained the same since the first book. He still tries to monetize gaming and avoid involvement with others. He lies about his grades to get more gaming time and avoids opening the door, a behavior that previously led to the fire department breaking it down. Cam’s lying to find more time to play video games spurred most of the action in the first book. This book starts with the same essential plot device, which indicates that Cam has learned little to nothing from his previous experiences. Even Cam's interactions with his friends—mainly asking them to pay for things for him and take responsibility for his mistakes—indicate a lack of growth on Cam's part. Cam's stagnation starts to cause rifts in his relationship with Chuck and Melody, foreshadowing future issues with other characters. Surrounded by characters who have grown under the P.A.G.'s influence, Cam remains the same.

Level 13 highlights the P.A.G.'s transformative power on its members, except for Cam, who resists change. Korman effectively contrasts Cam's stagnation with the growth of his peers, setting up juxtapositions that highlight personal development and the challenges of adolescence. This contrast emphasizes the importance of personal growth and adapting to change, crucial lessons for middle school students navigating their formative years. Through the evolving characters, Korman illustrates that growth is a continuous journey that requires effort and openness to change—a concept he explores through the theme of Evolving Identities, Relationships, and Responsibilities.
