Ana Huang vaulted onto the literary scene when her self-published Twisted series was picked up by Bloom Books and traditionally republished in 2022. Huang is the author of several contemporary romance novels and specializes in the subgenre of dark romance, which is known for portraying morally ambiguous male love interests and employing elements of mystery, danger, high tension, and explicit sexual content. Huang is Chinese American and advocates for diversity in the romance genre, often featuring Asian American characters in her novels—such as Vivian from King of Wrath, Ava from Twisted Love, and Josh from Twisted Hate.
Huang first began writing as a way to practice her English, and her hobby evolved into a career-making passion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she began self-publishing her novels on Kindle Unlimited, and these first titles quickly gained traction amongst the “BookTok” community on TikTok. Twisted soon became a viral phenomenon that gained the attention of Bloom Books, an imprint of Sourcebooks publishing house. Ana Huang’s published works include the If Love series, the Twisted series, and the Kings of Sin series. The Kings of Sin will continue in 2025-2026 with the release of King of Envy, King of Gluttony, and King of Lust. Huang has also ventured into the increasingly popular sports romance genre with her 2024 release of The Striker.
The Kings of Sin series is set in the same world as the Twisted series and includes brief crossovers with various characters and locations from her other novels. Within the Kings of Sin series, each male protagonist or love interest engages in one of the seven deadly sins—wrath, pride, greed, sloth, envy, gluttony, or lust. The ongoing series will likewise consist of seven corresponding installments when completed.
In this particular series, Huang often engages with the subgenre of billionaire romance, which features extremely wealthy male love interests. This subgenre is popular with self-published and Kindle Unlimited authors and features such popular titles as the Dreamland Billionaires series by Lauren Asher and the Fifty Shades series by E.L. James. Huang also stays true to her engagement with the dark romance subgenre by tackling complex themes such as emotional growth, trauma recovery, and personal redemption.
Huang’s use of common romance tropes in her novels is a well-known trait. For example, Twisted Love is a grumpy/sunshine romance that contrasts an optimistic female lead with an outwardly unfriendly male love interest, while Twisted Hate includes an enemies-to-lovers twist and Twisted Games explores the nuances of an age-gap romance. With Twisted Lies, Huang moves on to critique the trope of fake dating, and King of Wrath goes so far as to feature an arranged marriage. Like its predecessors, King of Greed includes a popular romance trope with its focus on a second-chance love story. The protagonists of King of Greed—Dominic and Alessandra Davenport—are first introduced in King of Wrath. Their brief appearances in Huang’s other titles hint at Dominic’s obsession with work and allude to the fact that Alessandra is always alone; these details lay the groundwork for the failing marriage and potential split that dominates the plot of King of Greed.
