Background

Series Context: Touching Spirit Bear

In the first novel of the Spirit Bear series, Touching Spirit Bear, Cole is arrested for attacking and permanently injuring a boy named Peter after Peter had reported Cole for theft. An elder from the Tlingit tribe named Garvey took an interest in Cole, seeing himself in the youth, and urged the courts to allow Cole a second chance through Tlingit tradition. Cole was taken to Circle Justice meetings and sent to live on an Alaskan island alone, where he nearly faced death several times. During his time on the island, Cole was attacked by a Spirit Bear, a large white bear that is a sacred animal to the Tlingit people. Because he survives, he learns to see outside himself and to empathize with the world around him.

Cole develops a bond with the Spirit Bear and even touches it at one point. To help heal the damage he caused Peter, Cole invites Peter to the island. Their time together is rough and awkward at first, with Peter even attacking Cole at one point. However, Peter learns to forgive Cole and sees that Cole was traumatized by how his father treated him. The boys develop a lasting friendship and heal together on the island. They bring what they learned back to the city with them, including the knowledge of the circular nature of life and the power of forgiveness.

While Cole was originally the one who was attacking and bullying others, he healed from his past and anger. Now, back at school amidst a chaotic and angry student body, he wants to spread that sense of healing, renewal, and change. By changing his inner reality, he has gained the power to change his world. Cole sees himself in Keith, and uses forgiveness and empathy to help Keith make better choices. All the while, Cole and Peter’s bond only gets stronger, and they rely on one another for companionship and understanding. In this way, Friendship Grown Out of Conflict and Forgiveness becomes the heart of Cole’s journey. Key symbols from the first novel, such as the at.óow, the Circle, and the Spirit Bear all continue to play a key role in Cole’s life, in ways he did not expect.

Social Context: Bullying and Its Effects

The novel shows how bullying continues to be a prominent and serious issue in schools today. It can take many forms, including verbal abuse, physical abuse, and the use of digital technology to inflict harm.

Bullying affects at least one in five adolescents ages 12 to 18, but a large portion of incidents also go unreported (“The Mental Health Impact of Bullying on Kids and Teens.” McLean Hospital, 2024). The effects of bullying can be immediate or gradual, and can range from mild to severe. Bullying can be as simple as name-calling, or as serious as attacking or killing someone. Bullying can have both physical effects and a lasting impact on mental health, which can reach into adulthood. Students who are bullied, particularly those who are bullied frequently or severely, are more prone to a loss in self-confidence and self-worth. They are more likely to criticize themselves and believe that others are judging them harshly. Bullying can also lead to social isolation, in which an adolescent may no longer wish to attend school or any public places for fear of being bullied. Bullying can also lead to long-term stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness, as well as a hesitancy and lack of trust toward relationships. Finally, as demonstrated in Ghost of Spirit Bear, bullying can also lead to death by suicide. People may choose to bully others for a variety of reasons, but these could include their own lack of self-worth, a desire to dominate or control others, lacking feelings of empathy or guilt, being jealous or frustrated, and projecting their own experiences of being bullied onto others. Speaking out for others, challenging negative opinions and actions, and taking steps to encourage empathy and unity are all ways that people can act to prevent bullying.
