Chapter 31 Summary

After Tris has completed her fear landscape, Eric injects her with another serum that he says will track her should she go missing, explaining that all members of Dauntless have received this injection as a precaution.

Tobias then remarks that Tris only has seven fears and will most likely be ranked first. Tris asks Tobias how much the leaders told him about her fear landscape, and he says that it was barely anything. He then asks if she has to go back to the dormitory, telling her that she can stay with him in his room until the banquet. She goes with him but flinches when he embraces her. When he demands to know what is wrong, she says that she sometimes wonders why he chose her. She suggests that maybe he is only interested in sex, but he says that if that was the case then he would probably not have chosen her first. Though Tris knows she is not the prettiest girl in Dauntless, she feels like she has been punched in the gut and says she is going to leave. However, Tobias apologizes and says that he had not meant it in that way.

Tris admits that Tobias was an obstacle in her fear landscape and that she is afraid of intimacy due to her lack of experience. To Tris’s surprise, though, Tobias admits that he is similarly inexperienced. They start kissing again, and Tris feels as though electricity is coursing through her veins. Tobias notices her tattoo of the Abnegation symbol and reveals that he has the same tattoo on his back. Not only this, he has tattoos of all the factions. He says that he does not agree with one faction putting down the virtues of the others: he explains, “‘I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest’” (405). Brushing the Abnegation symbol, Tris states that they must warn them soon.

When Tobias asks Tris if she is scared, she says that she is scared of what she wants—him. He holds her hands against his torso and, when she rests her head against his chest, she feels his heartbeat racing. When she asks if he is afraid, he smiles and says “‘Terrified’” (406). They kiss again and Tris feel that they fit each other perfectly.

Chapter 32 Summary

In the dining hall, Christina asks Tris what job she is going to pick, and she replies that maybe she could be an ambassador for other factions. Christina also remarks that the Dauntless leaders were laughing as they watched her fear landscape, and Tris initially refuses to reveal what they were laughing at. However, she then admits that it was a fear of intimacy, though she pretends that the male figure was anonymous.

Eric begins his speech and the initiates’ rankings appear on the screen behind him, with Tris at number one. Will and Christina also make the cut, as does Peter, while Molly and Drew are left factionless. Tris allows herself to hug and kiss Tobias, and feels that this is the best moment of her life. However, as Tobias’s fingers run over the injection site in her neck, she suddenly figures something out relating to the serum and pulls away. Tobias is confused but Tris says she will talk to him later. She can barely think straight, but she now knows how Erudite are going to get Dauntless to fight.

Chapter 33 Summary

That night, Tris is startled to find the initiates filing out of the dormitory as though they are sleepwalking. She observes that they are walking in unison, and she tries to replicate their pace. When they reach a large cavern, Tris sees tables piled with guns. As she suspected, the injections given the previous day have turned the entire faction into brain-dead killing machines. Tris, however, would rather die than wage war against Abnegation, and she resolves to save her family.

The initiates then board a train, and Tris feels a hand help her aboard. Seeing Tobias looking as expressionless as the others makes her feel tearful, but she is reassured when he squeezes her hand. After a while, the initiates leap from the train and march into the city, and Tris witnesses Tori shooting a council member in the head. The Dauntless are now perfect soldiers who obey orders without question.

When she feels Eric’s finger poke her cheek, Tris struggles not to react. A female voice asks Eric if the soldiers can see or hear them and Eric says that they can; they just process things differently, as they now receive commands from a computer. Eric subsequently points a gun at Tobias, and asks if anyone would notice if he got shot. The woman says “‘Go ahead’” (424), but Tris aims her gun at Eric. Eric says that she will not shoot, and she knows that he is right in believing that she will not murder him. Instead, she shoots him in the foot, and Tobias shoots Eric’s friend in the leg. Tris and Tobias then flee, but Tris is shot in the shoulder and falls. Soldiers surround them and Eric orders them to give up their weapons, referring to them as “‘Divergent rebels’” (425).

Chapter 34 Summary

Tobias and Tris are led into Abnegation headquarters, where Jeanine sits behind a desk. Jeanine says that she had always suspected that Tris was Divergent, but Tobias’s tests gave no indication that he was. She concludes that his Divergence is weaker and that he really does belong in Abnegation.

Rather than kill them right away, Jeanine explains that she has been working to rectify the Divergents’ immunity to the serum that she developed. So far she has failed, but she needs more test subjects. Tris does not know why Jeanine does not just have Divergents killed, but Jeanine is interested in knowing why most Divergents hail from the “weak-willed” Abnegation faction. Tris had not known this, but Tobias challenges Jeanine by saying that it takes a strong will to manipulate a simulation. He adds that brainwashing an army is hardly evidence of a strong will.

Jeanine says that she is no fool: the Erudites were sick of being dominated by “‘self-righteous idiots’” (429) but knew that they could not overturn Abnegation on their own. The leaders of Dauntless were happy to get involved in exchange for a place in the new government. Jeanine claims that people will experience wealth, comfort, and prosperity in this improved system, but Tris asks what the cost will be. Jeanine replies that the plan is to assimilate the factionless and Abnegation into the Dauntless army, at which point Candor will also cooperate and there will be no further dissent.

Tobias loses his temper, condemning Jeanine for attacking innocent people, but Jeanine claims that some of these people are far from innocent; Marcus, for instance. Tobias admits that his father is a tyrant but argues that “‘his evil didn’t involve the widespread manipulation of an entire faction and the systematic murder of every political leader we have’” (430). There is a tense silence before Jeanine returns to the topic at hand. She explains that it will be her job to ensure that people from Abnegation are kept in order, and it does not bode well that some are Divergents. She adds that she may not be able to control their will at present, but there are things she can control. At this point, Tris observes that Jeanine thinks in a logical way based on problems and solutions, and Divergence is just another problem to solve.

Jeanine states that she can control what Divergents see and hear, so she has created a serum that will adjust their surroundings in order to manipulate their will. She adds that Tobias is to be the first test subject; Tris is too injured to be useful and will be killed shortly. Tobias lunges at Jeanine and wraps his hands around her throat, but two soldiers pull him away. Jeanine then injects him with a syringe and he appears confused at first before wrapping his hands around Tris’s throat and choking her. Jeanine says that this serum alters what Tobias sees, causing him to confuse friends with enemies. One of the guards pulls Tobias away again, but Tris knows that he is now controlled by the serum.

Jeanine states that this serum has an advantage over the one administered to the other Dauntless, as the recipient can act independently and is therefore more effective than a mindless soldier. She then instructs the guards to take Tobias to the control room where he will monitor things. As for Tris, Jeanine gestures that she is to be executed, and the guards drag her away. She bites one of them on the hand and the last thing she remembers is him hitting her.

Chapter 35 Summary

Tris wakes alone in a dark room with a video camera attached to one of the walls. She sees a small opening in the floor that leads to a tank, and water starts rising. She focuses on her breathing, hoping that this will help her forget that she is about to die; however, a figure breaks the glass from outside. Tris recognizes her mother, though her determined look is unfamiliar and she is holding a gun. As they make their way through the door, Tris sees that the guards have been killed. Her mother fires at some more guards further down the hallway and Tris notices that she has a Dauntless tattoo. Tris thinks back all the years she spent at home, during which time she had not considered that her mother could be anything other than Abnegation.

Tris’s mother tells her that there will be time for questions later, but their immediate goal is to escape and meet up with the other Abnegation members, including Tris’s father and brother, who are in hiding. Still, Tris feels compelled to ask about Divergence, and her mother reveals that she herself is Divergent. She had only been saved because her own mother was a Dauntless leader who instructed her to find a safer faction on the day of choosing.

Some more Dauntless guards approach, and Tris’s mother instructs her to run away. Meanwhile, she will fire several gunshots to distract the guards. Tris runs as instructed but looks back when she hears return fire. She suppresses a scream as she sees her mother shot dead; she feels like collapsing. However, she thinks of her mother and Tobias telling her to be brave and manages to start running.

Chapters 31-35 Analysis

After the fear landscape exercise, Eric injects Tris with a serum he says will allow her to be tracked should she leave the compound. This injection has been administered to all Dauntless members, and Eric claims that it is just a precautionary measure. In reality, though, Eric is lying, and this mass administration of the serum provides the driving force behind the following chapters.

Tris and Tobias become even closer in Chapter 31, with Tobias inviting Tris to join him in his room. Tris again displays uneasiness and a lack of confidence when she questions Tobias about his motivation in pursuing their relationship: she knows that she is not the prettiest girl in Dauntless and cannot see why he chose her. When she suggests that maybe he is only interested in sex, he says that he probably would not have chosen her first if that was the case. Tris’s confidence is bruised even further by this comment but Tobias clearly did not mean to insult her. As he reassures her, he meant that he knew what kind of person she was from the outset and his interest in her is not just sexual.

As Tris explains, her lack of confidence stems from inexperience, and she admits that Tobias featured in her fear landscape. To her surprise, though, Tobias reveals that he is similarly inexperienced. Tobias appears worldlier than Tris throughout the novel, and Tris sometimes has to remind herself that he is also a teenager. As Tris is the narrator, the reader is inclined to develop the same impression of Tobias, so his admission here is surprising. It also reiterates that he is not merely a stern training instructor who is old beyond his years, nor is he as confident and experienced as Tris assumes.

With Tobias having reassured Tris, the couple embrace, and Tris notices that Tobias has a tattoo of the Abnegation symbol. In fact, he has all the faction symbols tattooed on his back, and his explanation is significant in that it questions the faction system. Tobias does not believe in splitting up personality traits in this way, nor does he approve of the way in which factions criticizes the values of the others. He does not just want to be brave but to be selfless, smart, honest, and kind.

When the final rankings are announced in Chapter 32, Tris is at number one and she is so happy that she allows herself to embrace Tobias publicly. However, when she feels his hand brush against the injection site in her neck, she experiences a sudden realization. She does not say what it is, as she can barely think straight due to the shock, but she now knows how Erudite plan to control the Dauntless. She cannot talk about it with Tobias publicly, but says she will meet him later in private.

Chapter 33 takes place later that night, when Tris, who has not yet spoken with Tobias, is startled by the sight of the other initiates filing out of the dormitory as though they are sleepwalking. She tries to replicate their movements and lack of expression, following them as they board a train. Tris is perturbed for a moment when she sees Tobias looking similarly expressionless, but he squeezes her hand to show that he is just acting. At this point, the reader comes to the same realization as Tris in the previous chapter: the serum that Eric administered is not merely a precautionary measure that serves a tracking function; it was administered to turn the members of Dauntless into mindless, obedient, killing machines.

As the initiates file into the city, we encounter scenes of violence and horror, with Abnegation members being shot by the brainwashed Dauntless soldiers, including Tori. The scene becomes even more dramatic when Eric points a gun at Tobias, wondering if anyone would notice if he were to die. This is clearly a personal vendetta, and Eric voices his bitterness about Tobias having been ranked above him in training. He relishes being in this position of power but is thwarted by Tris, who shoots him in the foot. However, when she and Tobias flee, she is shot in the shoulder and they are apprehended. By referring to them as Divergent rebels, Eric shows that there are no longer any doubts regarding their status.

It is at this point that Tris and the readers finally grasp why being able to manipulate simulations is so dangerous: unlike the other members of Dauntless, Tris and Tobias cannot be controlled. Jeanine states this outright when they are taken to her office in Chapter 34, though she hopes that further experimentation will result in a serum that also works on Divergents. That Tobias is immune to the serum is also notable, in that it approves that he too is Divergent. Jeanine had already suspected Tris, but Tobias’s results gave no indication of Divergence. She concludes that his Divergence is weaker and that he genuinely belongs in Abnegation. Whether this is the case, we do not know, as Tobias’s status and test results are vague compared to those of Tris. Still, Tobias’s immunity to the serum indicates that he is Divergent.

Tris makes a relevant point in asking Jeanine why she does not just have Divergents killed. As she is Erudite, however, Jeanine is focused on knowledge and wants to know why most Divergents hail from Abnegation. If one regards this faction as weak willed, as Jeanine does, then this does not make sense. However, Tobias does not believe that the Abnegation trait of selflessness is a form of weakness—quite the opposite. He consequently defends his former faction, adding that brainwashing an army to do one’s bidding is hardly an example of bravery.

Jeanine remains composed during this exchange, as emotional outbursts and attacks are not the Erudite way. Instead, she clarifies the motive behind recruiting Dauntless: she is well aware that Erudite could not overthrow Abnegation without help, and Dauntless were happy to get involved in exchange for a place in government. Thus, we learn that Erudite is not only the faction that is unhappy with Abnegation’s monopoly government. We also see that the faction system has had dire consequences that stand in stark contrast to its original aims.

Building on Will’s earlier criticisms of Abnegation, Jeanine argues that the new government will lead to comfort and prosperity, rather than the frugality associated with the current arrangement. The plan is to assimilate the factionless and the remaining Abnegation member into the Dauntless army which will prompt Candor to cooperate. Then, there will be no further division or resistance.

While Jeanine appears rational and collected, Tobias cannot control his temper and denounces her for killing innocent people. Her retort is that some of these people—such as Tobias’s father—are not innocent. It is indeed the case that not all Abnegation members are model citizens, and Tobias acknowledges his father’s cruelty. Still, even Marcus never resorted to mass murder.

Rather than enter into a debate with Tobias, Jeanine retains her composure and explains what will happen next. In fact, Tris remarks that Jeanine thinks in a logical manner that focuses on problems and solutions. She may not have found a way to control Divergents yet, but she can control what Divergents see and hear, and this enables her to control them in an indirect way. For instance, she can cause a person to see their friend as an enemy—as she demonstrates when she forcibly injects Tobias with a serum. Sure enough, Tobias attacks Tris, though the Erudite guards quickly pull him away.

Tobias is now under Erudite control and Jeanine orders the guards to take him to the control room where he will monitor what is going on. As Tris is injured, however, Jeanine deems her useless. This is another “problem,” and killing Tris is its solution.

In Chapter 35, Tris wakes in room that is filling up with water, harking back to the scenario in her fear landscape. This time, though, a figure breaks the wall from the outside, and Tris sees that it is her mother. In contrast to the woman she grew up with, Tris now witnesses her mother brandishing a gun and wearing a determined expression. Tris’s mother proceeds to shoot several guards as they make their getaway, and Tris notices that she has a Dauntless tattoo. Tris had already suspected that her mother was from this faction, but these Dauntless credentials are in full display in this chapter.

Though they have little time to talk, Tris’s mother reveals that she is Divergent and that her Dauntless mother had instructed her to transfer to a safer faction on her day of choosing—indeed, despite the positive experiences that Tris has had in her chosen faction, Abnegation seems a far better choice for a Divergent who fears being discovered. She also reveals that Tris’s father and Caleb are in hiding, along with some fellow Abnegation escapees.

When more guards approach, Tris’s mother says that she will distract them so that Tris can make a run for it. Tris does as instructed but is horrified to see her mother being killed by return fire. She feels like collapsing but is pushed onward by her mother’s and Tobias’s encouragement to be brave.
